Many people believe that in order to have a good site, you must have lots of cool graphics, bright colors and other things that will attract the eye. Unfortunately, this isnt exactly the right answer. Your websites design has a lot more to do with looking appealing then it does with flashy colors and things.
The purpose of your site has a lot more to do with it then anything. If you have a blog, then it is important that your posts are easy to find and easy to read. Your fonts should be readable and the colors should be inviting and not distract from the post. If your site is something that would be better explained using almost all graphics, then that is what you would want to use.
Distractions On Your Site
There are a few things that are designed to help your site out but if used in the wrong way, can become more distractions then anything. Graphics on your blog should be few and far between and should be something that will enhance the look of your site and not take away from it. Make them as tasteful as possible too.
Images are also an important part of your design and the posts that you are making. But they can also be a distraction if they are not placed properly or if they really dont fit in well with the post. There are many places to get great, quality images and for cheap. And having images are not something you must have with every post you make.
Be Organized
No matter what kind of site you have, it must be organized.
All links should be easy to find and easy to get to. If your site is full of too much to click on or too many different ideas and places, then your readers wont know where to start or where to go. Keep it simple and you will have the most success.
These are just a few good pointers for having a good design for your site.
After you have what you think is a good looking site, you could try submitting it to a few galleries to see how good looking your site really is from what they say.
